this is us

our travels, adventures, good eats and everything us

it’s not dunzo, silly – it’s duozo!

after a night of “housekeeping” (yeah, i love unpacking neverending boxes) while mike played with some college peeps, we headed into the city today for lunch with a friend.  it was a “ladies who lunch with their temporarily unemployed husbands” date.  good thing everyone on hand enjoys a little omega-3s and wasabi.

said friend openly admitted that she spends at least twice a week eating at duozo, a fairly new sushi spot on dartmouth avenue.  i take that has a high recommendation, wouldn’t you?  it’s “seriouslythisclose” to the back bay station on the orange line and super modern inside.  the hostess and decor matched – and you could tell she thought about that fact while putting on her black pencil skirt and wide red, patent-leather belt (will i just simply mesh into the straight-edged bar and booths???) – but the seats had suprisingly more cushion than expected.

trivial details – the sashimi was FABulous!  prices for lunch aren’t so bad and a happy hour salmon stop may be in order just to sample some of their widely talked about cocktails.  i got the tartare sampler, which had ahi with ponzu and a pepper/roe relish; salmon with spicy mustard and scallions; and a spicy seafood “salad” stuffed into a fried shumai wrapper.  both the ahi and salmon sat on a green leaf and a taro chip.  CRUNCH.  mike got the sashimi lunch and i had to hold my breath as three big chunks of octopus stared squarely at him – not his favorite by far.  good buy mustered through and actually enjoyed it though.  friend got the sushi lunch with a sweet potato roll.  sounded cool, but i just can’t deal with all that rice.  chop khao maak maa, but only in another land.

soooo…totally enjoyed my time at duozo, despite this somewhat lackluster review.  i’ve read a few raves of other spots (o ya, uni – which is like the “four seasons” of all things sushi. they hold sake bomb sundays!) and we still have to blaze through birdie’s fugakyu gift card before we head back though.  but – it definitely gets 3.5 me stars.
